For die-hard stoners, strains of marijuana are like Pokemon: you need to try them all. However, sometimes finding a strain isn’t as easy as selecting them online and receiving them in the mail. Even with the explosion in popularity that weed is enjoying, some strains are hard to find. These rare strains include some of the most well-known names in Cannabis like Hindu Kush and Panama Red. In contrast, some of them are fairly unknown like Jelly Breath.

Below, we’ve compiled a list containing six of the rarest strains in cannabis today. There’s indicas, Sativas, and hybrids on our list – we didn’t discriminate. Check them out and see how many you’ve tried.

Highlights:

  • Rarest Indica: Hindu Kush
  • Hard-to-find hybrids: Bubba OG, Bluefin Tuna Kush, Jelly Breath, Hawaiian Cookies
  • Uncommon Sativas: Panama Red

What Makes A Strain Rare?

Uncommon Cannabis: Six Hard-to-find Strains In 2020

There isn’t one specific reason for a strain’s rarity. Sometimes, strains that were hugely popular in the past are now difficult to find. This is especially true with many landraces, which grow naturally in the wild. Landraces can often change over time thanks to the inherent change they experience over generations.

Sometimes, strains are rare because they’re new. While they may be high-quality strains, they just haven’t caught on yet. In this case, it may only be a matter of time before they blow up in popularity. In contrast, some new strains are rare precisely because they’re popular and growers can’t keep up with demand.

Six Rare Strains

The strains we chose run the gamut of genetics. Some are heavy indicas, some are stimulating Sativas, and still, others are high-flying hybrids. We’ll kick off our list with one of the most famous strains of all time: Hindu Kush.

Bluefin Tuna Kush

Another strange strain, this rarity is relatively new. Bluefin Tuna is so novel, in fact, that many strain databases aren’t even aware of its existence. Although it’s a British Columbia classic, Bluefin Tuna is somewhat unknown outside of Canada.

What we do know about Bluefin Tuna Kush is its genetics. It’s an Indica-dominant cross between Tuna Kush and DJ Short’s Blueberry. We also know that it’s hugely powerful. Its THC concentration dwarfs other strains, ranging from 20 to 30 percent. It also has a pungent, funky smell, combining tones of skunk, diesel, and fishy aromas.

Jelly Breath

Jelly Breath is in the same situation as Bluefin Tuna Kush. It’s so rare that not much is known about it. What we do know about this uncommon strain is that it appears to be a cross between Mendo Breath and Do-Si-Do. That makes it a highly Indica-dominant hybrid with potent sedative properties.

Also like Bluefin Tuna Kush, Jelly Breath has a huge THC concentration. It clocks in at 30 percent or more, giving it super-powerful properties. Its respectable CBD content – coming in at 2 percent – means that this strain utilizes the Entourage Effect. Thanks to this phenomenon, the presence of multiple cannabinoids in a strain makes its high even more potent. As a member of the Kush family of strains, Jelly Breath can trace its lineage back to another uncommon cannabis strain on this list: Hindu Kush.

Hawaiian Cookies

Hawaiian Cookies comes in at the top of our list as the rarest strain of 2020. It’s a relative newcomer, first surfacing sometime in 2014. Hawaiian Cookies is a bold combination of Hawaiian Snow and Girl Scout Cookies, one of the biggest strains of the last decade. One of the reasons Hawaiian Cookies is so rare is because its parent, Hawaiian Snow, is so hard to find.

Although relatively unknown right now, Hawaiian Cookies has the potential to make a huge splash in the coming years. With a fairly high THC concentration, Hawaiian Cookies is a true hybrid, balanced perfectly between Indica and Sativa. It boasts a robust tropical citrus scent, tingling the nostrils of those nearby.

Hindu Kush

Although Hindu Kush is the progenitor of nearly every Indica strain, Hindu Kush is fairly difficult to find these days. In addition to changing over time, the region where Hindu Kush plants grow naturally – straddled between Pakistan and Afghanistan – is generally considered fairly dangerous today.

While it might not be easy to find Hindu Kush itself, there are plenty of strains based around its legendary genetics. Hindu Kush is one of the original indicas that proliferated worldwide during the 1970s. As a result, countless indicas can trace their lineage back to Hindu Kush. Hindu Kush’s distinct smell has become legendary as well.

Bubba OG

One of the main strains that Matt “Bubba” Berger brought along when he moved from Florida to California, Bubba OG has nearly become a household name. It’s descended from two of Berger’s other famous strains, Bubba Kush and OG Kush. It takes its flavours and aroma from both its parents, giving it hints of hash, incense, and fuel.

This Indica-dominant hybrid has a heavily sedating high. Sometimes called OG Bubba, this strain’s THC concentration and sweet flavour made it famous during the 1990s. It’s a lot more difficult to find Bubba OG these days, though.

Panama Red

Like Hindu Kush, Panama Red suffers from the typical problem landraces have. This strain first emerged as one of the main South American Sativa plants. Generations of smokers enjoyed Panama Red’s old-school Sativa high, beginning with the hippies of the 1960s. It was even immortalized in the title of a New Riders of the Purple Sage song.

However, it’s more difficult to find Panama Red today. Growers began to cultivate other faster-growing strains to churn out harvests and make money faster. Asa a result, Panama Red’s popularity began to fade, and it’s a relative rarity today.

Rare Doesn’t Mean Impossible to Find

While these strains may be uncommon, they’re not unicorns – they do exist. In fact, you can find many of the strains listed on this page in our web store. If you know any super-rare strains that you think deserve a spot on our list, let us know in the comments below.
